Process of Making Tile Murals

Tile always works as artistically role for the decoration and DIY, no matter for the bathroom wall or outdoor wall, inspirations can be found from these colorful tiles pieces. People who love DIY and design are crazy about making tile murals by themselves. They will be very proud of themselves once their works are display or put on the wall. You may wonder how to make tile murals, in fact, from making a small decorative table to a giant sculpture; the basic process is the same. 

Instructions

1. Cement board is the best choice as the backing of tile murals, maybe it’s more convenience or cheaper by using other surfaces, but wood and other materials warp are easier to turn over when you are working. At the same time, choose smooth, glossy tiles; they will make the grouting step much easier.

2. In order to get recognizable images, you should draw a simple design on the board, with this outline as a guide, paste the tile pieces to the board using tile binder, and remember to leave about 1/4 inch gaps for all tiles.

3. After pasting all the tiles, wait the binder to dry completely, begin to smear grout to the gap of tiles, make sure the gaps are filled completely.

4. Before the grout begin to dry, wipe the surface of the tile with a dry sponge immediately, remove the extra grout and clean the surface, keep wiping until the tiles are all clean and the grout is relatively smooth.

Warnings: It’s especially important to wipe the grout well when it’s wet, or it will be very difficult to clean once it become dry.

The 25th China International Ceramic and Bathroom Fair

The 25th China Foshan International Ceramic & Bathroom Fair begins from Apr.18.2015 to Apr.22.2015. We Colorbuilding had a visit to the fair as previous years on Apr.21. It is a good time to obtain new trends of tiles since exhibitors are trying their best to show his strength and new arrivals. Unfortunately, it seems that no much new thing on the fair although the decoration is beautiful.

Décor tiles are one of the important roles in the fair. Many exhibitors show the encaustic tiles at their booths. Some are handmade, some printed, some hexagon, etc. They were popular after the cersaie fair 2013. 

Rustic tiles also can be seen everywhere in the fair. The tiles have no much change, but more decorative accessories. Compare with glossy micro-crystal tiles, I like rustic tiles much more because of its rural style.

Mosaic City is the second place we went to. The most impressive product for me is full body glass mosaic. The smallest size can be 5x5mm! It makes the mural more vivid and beautiful. Hexagon and lantern shape mosaic are still the fashion in the Mosaic City, no matter it is made of glass, ceramic, shell, metal, or stone, etc. Mosaic puzzles and hand cut murals are the most attractive artworks in all the show rooms.

How to Make Cements Tiles

Cement tiles are a popular decorative tile using in and around home and commercial space. The tiles are ideal for hallways, entryways, outdoor patios, flooring and wall inside of homes, etc. Cement tiles are popular and hot sale after they have been promoted in the market because of  their various colorful designs which are easy to accomplish. Clients and home owners can also design their own patterns and make them come ture. You will completely understand after you know how they come out.

1. Make a mold. First, draw out the master divider. Plan your design on graph paper before starting, using a pencil to draw in your design pattern. Secondly, use bass strips instead of iron for mold fabrication because it is not easy to be rusted on bass. Finally, weld the mold to make it firm and strong enough. 

2. Put color pigments into the mold. First of all, make coloring instructions. A clear instruction on hand can reduce mistakes. Secondly, get the colors pigments ready. Put water into the pigment powder and make the color into liquid. Thirdly, brush a little oil on the bottom board of the frame, then put the divider into the steel frame and make it firmly. Next, pour the colors into the dividers.
 
3. Then, get the mold out of the frame.
 
4. After taking out the mold, put cement powder into the frame. Use the hydraulic press machine to press the cement to make sure the tile is firm and hard. After that, take the steel frame off, demold them. Water immersion is an important step which enables the tiles to be more flexible and harder.

5. Dry the tiles and pay attention to the dust since it is a bit wet after coming out. After it is dry, put it into stock.

How To Make Handmade Decorative Tile

Handmade decorative tile has become a trend since it is full of creation and it spark inspirations. Designer and art lovers are  very crazy about it. Homeowners may also have a try. It is not so difficult as they think. Pouring the prepared plaster into the mold box, over the carving.This part is always a little tense,  if anything goes wrong, it's a lot of hours of work down the drain.

A reclaimed dryer motor with an unbalanced wooden fly wheel mounted on the pouring table.This vibrates the table while pouring the plaster and ensures there's no air bubbles trapped in the mold.

The carving rarely survives this process and is thrown into the clay scrap pile. We now have a master mold, one tile or several in the case of smaller accent and border tiles, will be made from this and another mold made from it.
This will become the production mold and the master will only be used when it's necessary to make a new production mold due to wear or breakage.

The tile making bench. A large heavy duty oak rolling pin is used to roll out slabs of wet clay to a specific even thickness on the canvas covered surface of the bench. Templates are used to cut the proper shape and size out of the slab to fit the mold.

The cut slabs of clay are placed into the mold, covered with a board and pounded with Johns very special duct taped wooden mallet.

The backs are trimmed, stamped and set aside until they're dry enough to remove from the mold.

The tiles are dried slowly in drying racks to prevent warping.This part just can't be rushed, especially with the larger tiles.

The tiles are dry and for some it's now time to start applying the color. The tiles are decorated in a variety of ways, these ones are hand painted with under gaze and will later have a clear gloss glaze over top.

    

All the tiles are fired twice at around 2000 degrees in one of our three kilns, which generally takes two or more days. Most of that time being cooling down, another thing that can't be rushed. The first firing is called a bisque firing,the clay is now hard and any painted on under glaze is fused to the tile. A glaze, either clear, colored, gloss or matte is then applied to the tile and the second and generally final firing is done. Bright gold, copper or mother of pearl are applied over a gloss glaze and require another firing at a lower temperature.
